A Poll and a Thread: Where's your Flow going?
What creative goals are calling -- and how can this community help you?
This January, I’ve been penning a post series about setting goals authentically. Not by looking to others to figure out what we should be doing, but becoming clear about our own desires (and constraints), then attuning to the wisest advice on offer from our own minds, our bodies, and ultimately — if you’re into this sort of thing — our souls.
It is also clear, from your responses to the last Q&A I posted as part of this series, that goal-setting work overlaps with grief work. To clear a space for what is to come, we often have to let go of a treasured prior vision of the future that did not come to pass, or no longer serves our present calling.
As wise
puts it:There comes a point for each of us when we don’t have the emotional or financial resources to try again or risk another disappointment. After years of stress, it’s time to give our minds and bodies a break and move on.
Whether you are starting again or bringing an important chapter in your life to a close, it has been an honor to hold space for all of it this past month.
To bring this post series to a close, and to support you in your creative seasons to come, I’m working on a resource roundup featuring my favorite writers, podcasts, books, etc. on setting authentic creative goals for ourselves that fill us up, rather than deplete our scarce reserves of time and energy. (In the past, I’ve done similar resource roundups on topics like marking a Complicated Mother’s Day or navigating the world as a Highly Sensitive Person.) It has often been a battle for me personally to simply get to the page each week during this past year with this project, so this topic is close to my heart.
To make my next missive as useful as possible, I’d love to hear from you. What kinds of goals are calling to you in this season? What kinds of resources would you like to receive?
Below, I’m including an “easy button” version of this — a one-click poll — and an invitation to share more in the comments, if your goal isn’t captured here, or you’re the kind of person who hates polls and prefers nuance. You can also send me an email at initiationwrites@gmail.com!
Anything else you’d care to share? I’d love to hear from you.
I’m honored that you shared my quote, Ryan! I look forward to your next roundup. 😁
